Chapter 9 Overview

Chapter 9 is titled 'Roof Assemblies' and covers the design and construction of roof coverings. The purpose of this chapter is to regulate materials and methods for the purpose of slowing the spread of fire, resisting detachment due to wind, and protecting the structure from weather. This chapter covers 16 different types of roof coverings as well as requirements for roof insulation, photovoltaic panel systems, and reroofing.

The model shows a partial cutaway view of an asphalt shingle roof covering assembly. The model also explodes and reassembles to show the installation order of the drip edges, ice barrier, starter strip, felt paper, and shingles. And while not addressed by the code, it is considered good construction practice to use a 5" offset pattern with standard 3-tab shingles (as used in the model), but be sure to follow manufacturer's installation instructions.
