Section R804.2.6.3 is titled 'Hole patching' and covers requirements for roof-ceiling construction. The requirement to replace or design in accordance with accepted engineering practice cold-formed steel roof framing members with web holes which exceed a size defined in this section, allowance for patching of web holes which exceed the size allowed by another section of this code, but do not exceed the size allowed by this section, the allowed reinforcement type, and the required fastening method is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows a cold-formed steel joist with a web hole larger than allowed by another section of this code, but smaller than the maximum size allowed by this section, being patched with a C-shaped section. The minimum area the patching piece must extend beyond the hole being patched is highlighted. Screws are spaced and kept away from the web hole edge in accordance with this section.
