R703.3.4

Section 703.3.4 is titled 'Minimum fastener length and penetration' and covers requirements for exterior wall coverings. The length and penetration depth of fasteners, dependent on the covering and sheathing is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent water and wind damage to the building.

The model shows 2 wall sections with foam and wood structural panel sheathing and nails installed. (The water-resistive barrier and covering are not being shown for clarity.) The nail through the foam sheathing penetrates into the stud 1-1/2", the top nail in the wood structural panel sheathing penetrates into the stud 1-1/2", the middle nail penetrates 1-1/4" into the sheathing and stud, and the bottom nail penetrates through the sheathing 1/4".
