R608.8.1

Section R608.8.1 is titled 'Reinforcement around openings' and covers requirements for wall construction. The requirement for exterior concrete walls to have reinforcement installed around openings of a minimum width in accordance with this section and a figure in this code, the allowance for the vertical reinforcement installed around openings to also serve as the end wall reinforcement required by another section of this code, the requirement for a minimum dimension of concrete above the opening, dependent on type of wall, and where walls are waffle- or screen-grid for a minimum amount of core to be on each side of the opening is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.
