R607.5.1

Section R607.5.1 is titled 'Deflection' and covers requirements for wall construction. The requirement for structural members supporting glass unit masonry to have a maximum deflection is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows a wood floor joist (colorized for clarity) which is being loaded to the maximum amount of deflection. (The adjacent floor joist is not being loaded and in a contrasting color to provide visual clarity.) The 120" span length/600 = 1/5" allowable deflection. Can the floor joist span tables in section 502 be used to determine the spans of joists supporting glass unit masonry panels?
