Section R606.8 is titled 'Chases' and covers requirements for wall construction. The requirement for chases and recesses in masonry walls to be a maximum depth, for horizontal chases to be a maximum length and to have a minimum amount of masonry backing, for the strength and fire rating not to be reduced below the required rating, not to be in a pier, and where wider than 12" for masonry above the chase to be installed on a lintel is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.
