R606.13

Section R606.13 is titled 'Multiple-wythe masonry' and covers requirements for wall construction. The requirement for the facing and backing wythes of multiple-wythe masonry walls to be bonded together in accordance with one of three sections of this code, for cavity walls to have a minimum thickness for each wythe and a maximum cavity width, and for the backing to be of equal or greater thickness than the facing is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure. This section has an exception which allows for a greater width of the cavity where it had been specifically designed. The purpose of this exception is to allow for engineered design not covered by the prescriptive requirements of this section of the code.

The model shows a partial section of a multiple-wythe masonry wall with 8" hollow cement block backing, brick veneer facing, and a 1" cavity.
