R602.3.5

Section R602.3.5 is titled 'Braced wall panel uplift load path' and covers the requirement for the connection of exterior braced wall panels that support roofs. Methods for making braced wall panel connections, dependent on multiple variables pertaining to air movement is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent uplift of a building, caused from high velocity air movement, which could lead to structural failure.

The model shows 2 partial sections of a braced wall panel (sheathing has been excluded for clarity). The 1st shows a connection of a rafter to the top plate being done in accordance with item #1 of this section. The 2nd shows the same connection being done in accordance with item #2 of this section (commonly referred to as a 'hurricane tie'). All framing members must be connected to each other, through the entire assembly to the foundation, to prevent uplift at any connection point, such as stud to bottom plate, etc. (Not shown in this model).
