R602.3.2

Section R602.3.2 is titled 'Top plate' and covers requirements for wall top plates. The requirement for a double top plate, overlapping corners and intersections, minimum end joint offset, clarification that joints are not required to occur over a stud, and minimum plate thickness and width is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure. This section has an exception which allows for a single top plate to be used where corners, intersections, and splices are done in accordance with a cross-referenced table, and joists or rafters are centered over the studs with a limited tolerance; as well as allowing for the elimination of the top plate over headers which are connected in accordance with the same cross-referenced table. The purpose of this exception is to allow for a reduction in material where the framing method limits the load the top plate carries.

The model shows 2 partial wall sections with the top plates colorized to provide clarity where the splices and overlaps occur, and several floor joists installed on each section. The 1st has a double top plate which allows the floor joists to be placed anywhere on the wall. The 2nd has a single top plate, which is interrupted by a header, and floor joists which are centered over the studs as required by this section. The corner connection and splice, as well as the header connection to the wall are done in accordance with table R602.3.2.
