Section R502.6.2 is titled 'Joist framing' and covers the requirements for attaching joists to the side of wood beams or girders. Allowed methods for attaching joists to beams or girders is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows 2 section examples of joists attached to a beam- one is using joist hangers (which must be approved by the Building Official), and the other is using a 2x2 ledger strip.
