R401.1

Section R401.1 is titled 'Application' and covers the requirements for the design of foundations and foundation spaces. The chapter which governs general foundation design and construction, an additional section which further governs foundations in flood hazard areas, and cross-reference to another standard for wood foundations is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure and storm water from entering interior foundation spaces. This section has an exception which allows wood foundations to follow the provisions of this section's chapter where the building construction is limited in scale. The purpose of this exception is to allow for a simplified and centralized approach to design and construction where such design is within the limited domain provided by this code.
