Section R325.6 is titled 'Habitable attic' and covers requirements for habitable attics. The allowance to not consider a habitable attic as an additional story of a dwelling, provided the space conforms to the items listed in this section is established. The purpose of this section is to clarify that habitable attics of specific configurations are intended to be allowed, and are not to be considered a story in the application of number of stories, and limitations thereof, for dwellings covered by this code.

The model shows a section of a one-story dwelling with a basement and a habitable attic space which meets all the list items of this section, therefore, not changing the designation of this building to 'two-story dwelling'.
