Section R322.1.8 is titled 'Flood-resistant materials' and covers requirements for flood-resistant construction. The requirement to use materials and construction methods which conform to a cross-referenced standard, where constructed below the level required by one of two sections of this code is established. The purpose of this section is to limit damage and loss to buildings and structures due to flooding, which are constructed in areas prone to such.

The model shows a wall section which uses treated lumber, treated plywood, water-resistant board to a point at least 1 foot above the base-flood elevation, and gypsum board above, which has a gap from the lower board to prevent wicking. A chair rail is typically installed to cover the gap (not shown in this model).
