R317.1.4

Section R317.1.4 is titled 'Wood columns' and covers requirements for protection of wood and wood-based products from premature decay. The requirement to use decay resistant columns, either naturally durable or treated is established. The purpose of this section is to reduce premature degradation of wood and wood-based products. This section has 3 exceptions which exempt columns from being decay resistant where used in locations where premature degradation is unlikely. The purpose of these exceptions is to not require protected columns where it is unnecessary.
