R314.3.1

Section R314.3.1 is titled 'Installation near cooking appliances' and covers the requirements for the placement of smoke alarms in relation to fixed cooking appliances. Minimum separation distances from cooking appliances for ionization type smoke alarms, ionization type smoke alarms with an alarm-silencing switch, and photoelectric type smoke alarms are established.

The model shows a split-level style dwelling with a stove and a highlighted area which shows the minimum distance for each type of smoke alarm. If the middle level smoke detector were an ionization type smoke alarm without an alarm-silencing switch, it would not be compliant. (Now realistically, measurements would not be taken in a straight line through walls, but instead through traversable routes.)
