R311.3.3

Section R311.3.3 is titled 'Storm and screen doors' and covers the requirements for the swing of storm and screen doors adjacent to exterior stairs and landings. The purpose of this section, as a matter of practicality, is to clarify that these types of doors, which are used in conjunction with exterior doors, are not subject to language related to door swings in sections R311.3.1 and R311.3.2. Storm doors allow occupants to provide natural ventilation into a dwelling which is important for health, as well as aiding in energy conservation. These benefits outweigh the risks associated with the outward swinging door.

The model shows an exterior door assembly with a storm door. Since it would be impractical to swing the storm door in the same direction as the exterior door, it is allowed to swing outward over landings and stairs.
