Section R311.1 is titled 'Means of egress' and covers requirements for providing exit paths to the public way. The requirement for a means of egress to be provided in accordance with this section, for the path to meet specific criteria, and for the egress door to open to a specific location is established. The purpose of this section is to assure occupants can get out and emergency responders can perform rescue operations without excessive effort.
