R308.6.4

Section R308.6.4 is titled 'Screens with multiple glazing' and covers the requirements for providing screening below skylights which have multiple panes of glazing. The type of glazing of the inboard pane which invokes the requirement for screening, a cross-reference to another code section for screen requirements, a cross-reference to another code section for exceptions to this section, and the allowed panes for other than the inboard pane is established. The purpose of this section is to reduce the risk of severe injury in the event of human impact with the glazing, or if the glazing otherwise breaks and falls to the walking surface below it.

The model shows 3 dual pane skylights with screening installed below them. The 1st has an inboard pane of tempered glass, the 2nd has an inboard pane of heat-strengthened glass, and the 3rd has an inboard pane of wired glass. The outboard pane can be any type of glazing allowed per section R308.6.2.
