R302.2.2

Section R302.2.2 is titled 'Common walls' and covers the requirements for townhouse fire-resistant construction of a common wall. Assignment of a fire-resistance rating in accordance with one of two list items, disallowance for plumbing, mechanical equipment, ducts or vents in the cavity, clarification that the fire rating shall be from both sides of the assembly, the assembly being built tight to exterior walls and roof sheathing, electrical being installed in accordance with specific chapters of this code, and electrical penetrations being done in conformance with another section of this code is established. The purpose of this section is to slow the spread of fire, heat, and smoke between adjacent units.
