R302.2.1

Section R302.2.1 is titled 'Double walls' and covers requirements for townhouse fire-resistant construction. The requirement to separate townhouses with individual wall assemblies which have a minimum fire-resistance rating in accordance with one of two cross-referenced standards or a section of the International Building Code is established. The purpose of this section is to slow the spread of fire, heat, and smoke between adjacent units.

The model shows partial sections of adjacent townhouse walls which are being moved apart to display that the wall for each unit is a stand-alone fire-resistance rated assembly.
