R302.10.1

Section R302.10.1 is titled 'Insulation' and covers requirements for burning characteristics of insulation. Insulation installed in specific locations being subject to this section, maximum flame spread and smoke-developed indexes as determined by one of two standards, and clarification that facings are to be included when tested is established. The purpose of this section is to slow the spread of fire and limit the amount of smoke in the event of a fire. This section has 3 exceptions which allow for facings which are concealed and in substantial contact with the unexposed face of the assembly covering to be exempt from testing requirements; for cellulosic fiber loose-fill to be allowed to conform to a different standard; and for foam plastic to comply with a different section of this code. The purpose of these exceptions is to allow for specific types of insulation to conform with standards which align with their composition.

The model shows a wall and ceiling section with fiberglass batt insulation being installed.
