Section R301.2.1 is titled 'Wind design criteria' and covers the requirements for the design and construction of a structure taking wind loads into consideration. Wind speed applicability and limitations, multiple construction methods' wind design application, elements of a structure which this section is applicable to, and design requirements for uplift forces is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows one example of wind forces on a building and how the building could be affected by such forces. Wind forces can be complex and may both push and pull against a structure, hence why the model shows the wind on each side. Also, wind direction changes pushing and pulling on a structure in different orientations (not shown in this model).
