R1003.7

Section R1003.7 is titled 'Offsets' and covers requirements for masonry chimneys. The maximum vertical offset of a single-wythe chimney with a fireclay flue liner, an allowance to disregard the maximum offset limitation where the offset is structurally supported in an approved manner, and a cross-reference to another section of this code which covers the maximum offset of each course is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows 2 partial cutaway sections of chimneys with indicators showing the vertical alignment of the top portion of the flue and the chimney wall below the offset. The 1st chimney is compliant with this section, as it does not offset the centerline of the flue past the centerline of the chimney wall. The 2nd chimney does, thus is not compliant with this section.
