Section R1001.9 is titled 'Hearth and hearth extension' and covers requirements for masonry fireplaces. Hearth and hearth extension allowable materials and structural integrity, as well as the required removal of combustible materials in contact with them is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent the building from catching fire.
