Chapter 7 Overview

Chapter 7 is titled 'Fire and Smoke Protection Features' and covers detailed construction and material requirements for fire-resistance rated structural members, walls, partitions, floors, and roofs; smoke resistant partitions; plaster and insulation; as well as prescriptive and calculated methods for determining a fire-resistance rating for building materials and groupings of materials (referred to as 'assemblies'). Most generally, the thicker a material is and the more layers of it, increases the fire-resistance rating of an assembly. Joint finishing and overlap, fasteners types and spacing, as well as other details also affect the rating.

The model shows a designed fire-rated wall under construction.
