Chapter 18 is titled 'Soils and Foundations' and covers the requirements for the natural ground, artificial ground (referred to as 'engineered fill'), and the base construction that is supported by the ground. The purpose of this chapter is to require adequate structural support for the building or structure, and prevent storm water entry into the building through the foundation system and interior floors on ground. Design, materials, and methods for different types of foundation systems are addressed, including underpinning of existing foundations.
The model shows a cutaway section of a concrete foundation wall with a spread footing, sill plate, waterproofing, insulation, and subsoil drainage system.
